Betty E. Norris

Star Beacon

BRADENTON, Fla. — Betty Ellen (Scharr) Norris, age 86, of Bradenton, Fla., died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014; daughter of Herman and Mary (Katzenberger) Scharr; wife of Marvin J. Norris for 65 years.

Betty started work in a ball bearing factory during World War II, then while farming with her husband, drove tractors, baled hay and kept the farm books. Once the family moved to Florida, she worked at the Shopping Guide, Hoods Dairy, and then Ellis Bank; retiring from NCNB (Bank of America) as Administrative Secretary to the Board of Directors. Upon retiring, she traveled with her husband across the country and in Europe with Elder Hostel.

She enjoyed planning and hosting family parties, and the times she spent with her Bunko friends. Everyone was graciously welcomed into her home. Throughout life her hobbies included making candles, painting murals and furniture, weaving baskets, caning furniture, collecting chickens and red glass, writing Christmas Family Poems, and quilting for family members. She volunteered at the Art League (ArtCenter Manatee).

Despite a long battle with cancer, she was charming to the end. Betty’s caring love was felt deeply by her four daughters and two foster daughters. Always young at heart, especially with her husband as they were often seen holding hands.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Lora (Clyde) Steinbach, Edna (Harvey) Lash, Ann (Carl) Anderson and Effie (Harley) Hampton; and foster daughter, Martha Millington Helsley.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin; her daughters, Vickie (Rick Tang) Norris of Healdsburg, Calif., Gwen Norris of Bradenton, Fla., Jill Norris of Lee, Fla., Bernice (Donald) Muschlitz of Gahanna, Ohio, and Robin (John) Moreland of Bradenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 15th, at GROOVER FUNERAL HOME, 1400 36th Ave. E. (Ellenton-Gillett Road), Ellenton.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be given to the ArtCenter Manatee (941) 746-2862 or Manatee Tidwell Hospice philanthropy 855-843-3935 x 7597.
