Salvatore Sorrentino

ASHTABULA — Salvatore Sorrentino, age 86, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died on Monday evening, Feb. 17, 2014, at the Ashtabula County Medical  Center.

Born Feb. 3, 1928, in Clairton, Pa., he was the son of Frank and Josephine (Ianni) Sorrentino.

Sal was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a World War II Era and Korean Conflict Era Veteran. He served in the Marine Corps from August 30, 1945 to Dec. 29, 1946, and from Jan. 3, 1951 to Jan. 18, 1951.

On Oct. 17, 1963, he married the former Peggy Lou Rohanna in Clairton, Pa. They moved to Ashtabula in September of 1980 and have been area residents ever since.

Mr. Sorrentino was retired as a long-time construction worker for Dick Co. and as a mechanic at the Ashtabula County Sheriffs Dept.

He enjoyed gardening, lawn care, hunting, watching westerns on television, sitting around the stone campfire and playing with beloved dogs, “Sephera and Sammy”. Sal loved and was fascinated by his grandchildren. He was the only person that did not complain about his daughter’s cooking.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy L. Sorrentino of Ashtabula; daughter, B. J. (Manuel) Massi of Ashtabula; son, Woody (Lainey) Sorrentino of Ashtabula; daughter, Kelley Sorrentino of Ashtabula; grandchildren, Lyndee (Nick) Massi Bodnar, Gabby “Gabe” Sorrentino, Cameron Sorrentino and Isabella Sorrentino; and sister, Philomena Paoletti of Clairton, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Shelley Sorrentino; and brothers, Joseph, Victor, Dominic and Nick Sorrentino.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21st, in Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Father Ernesto Rodriguez as celebrant. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery with Military Honors being conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard Team from Post #103.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 20th, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19th St. in Ashtabula.
