ASHTABULA — Miles M. Mason, age 84, of Saybrook Township, Ohio, entered heaven’s gates Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Born April 17, 1929, in Ashtabula, Ohio, he was the son of Leonard and Mary Ann (Takacs) Mason and has been a lifetime area resident. He attended Edgewood Schools.

He first worked for the Ashtabula Rubber Company and then the Industrial Rayon Company in Painesville as an Assistant Fireman. Miles then spent the next 44 years in the forging industry, first for the Bow Socket, then Ken Forge, retiring in 2000. He had also been a member of the 137th Tank Battalion of the Ashtabula Ohio National Guard.

Miles was a 62 year member of the First Christian Church of Ashtabula where he served as a deacon, trustee and usher. He then joined The First United Methodist Church where he became an usher and served on the board of trustees.

When his boys were younger, he was both their Indian Guide Leader and Pack 14 Cub Scouts Leader in Plymouth Township. He was a member of the Ashtabula Lion’s Club and the Moose Club.

He was an avid traveler with his camper, driving to the four corners of the United States. He traveled seven times to the Hawaiian Islands and enjoyed many cruises. He loved fishing (he once caught a ten foot sailfish), bowling, golf, gardening and woodworking. Miles built a birdhouse for several family members. He would cut and burn firewood to heat the house with, but most of all he loved family gatherings.

As a devoted husband, Miles is survived by his wife, Marguerite, whom he married Oct. 19, 1985; two sons, James (Jacklyn) Mason of Berea and Timothy (Tina) Mason of Ashtabula; two step-children, Gerald (Louise) Libbey of Ashtabula and Donna Seaman of Spring, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer, Shaun, Timothy Jr., Susan, James M., Michelle, Sarah, Brandon, Kimberly and Joshua; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, William (Shirley) Mason of Kingsville and Leonard Jr. Mason of Melbourne, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wilma in 1983; a son, Douglas Mason; a sister, Jean Avis; and four brothers, Richard Mason, Donald E. Mason, Robert L. Mason and Ernest Mason.

The Funeral Service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS & CREMATORY, INC., 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Christine Bell, of the First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Michael Legg, of the First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. The burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.

Calling Hours will be Wednesday, Feb. 5th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home and on Thursday from 12 p.m., Noon, until the time of Service.
