SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. — Max William Harju, age 92, formerly of Lenox Township, Ohio, passed away peacefully in Simpsonville S.C. on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012.
Max was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on Feb. 4, 1920, to Matti and Ida Niskanen Harju, and moved to Lenox with his family at the age of two. He attended Lenox School through 10th grade and then Jefferson High School to finish his education. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Italy during WWII.
He enjoyed farming, raising hogs and beef cows. He was employed with Harold Inman Well Drilling until he retired in 1982. He married Shirley J. Spangler on August 31, 1947 and recently celebrated 65 years of marriage to his neighbor gal.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three sons, Darrell of El Paso, Texas, Dana (Kim) of Jefferson and Doug (Kris) of Simpsonville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Matt Harju, Alex Harju, Erica (Shannan) Mack, Barrett (MacKenzie) Harju and Ryan (Kristen) Harju; and four great-grandchildren, Madison and Mollie Harju and Olivia and Julia Mack. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Harju of Lenox Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Leo.
A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
