ASHTABULA — Margaret M. Ranta, age 96, died peacefully Wednesday morning, July 2, 2014. She was a life long resident of Ashtabula.
She was born Dec. 31, 1917, in Delancy, Pa. She lived her early childhood years in a Catholic orphanage in Erie, Pa., leaving to live with her older brother Frank Zelonish and his family when she was thirteen years old. Later Margaret married Urho Ranta and they settled in Ashtabula after World War II.
Mrs. Ranta loved ballroom dancing with her husband, music and was a frequent traveler to Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada where she spent time with her husband’s family and made many Canadian friends. She was a homemaker and had various jobs from time to time and did volunteer work especially in Ashtabula Hospital Gift Shop during the 1970’s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Urho Ranta on July 3, 1972. In the later years, she enjoyed the company and sense of humor of Walter Olkowski of the Harbor who died several years ago.
She leaves her son, John Lee Ranta and his wife Carole Carter Ranta of Fort Washtington, Md.; granddaughter, Kirstie Ranta Pomaranski and her husband John of Alexandria, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Ella Rose, six years old and Scott Thomas Pomaranski, three years old.
A Memorial Service will be held 7 p.m., Saturday, July 5th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. She will be interred near her husband’s grave site in Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada.
Calling Hours will be Saturday, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Funeral Home.
