Henry Repasky

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Henry Repasky, age 90, of Cupertino, Calif., died at home on Wednesday, July 3, 2013.

As a young man, Henry sailed the Great Lakes, then at the age of 18, he was drafted to serve in World War II. During the war, he was in the Army Corps of Engineers and participated in both the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning from the war, Henry married Mary and built their home on property he and two brothers owned near Lake Erie in North Kingsville, Ohio. There they raised six children, born over a ten year span. Henry enjoyed classical music and instilled that appreciation into his children.

During his time in North Kingsville, Henry ran Foremost Builders, the family construction business and was active in the local Democratic Party.

In early 1970, Henry and Mary began to explore other places to live because of knee and back problems that were aggravated by his W.W.II military service. Hayward, Calif., was to become their new home and once Henry found work in the area, Mary and the rest of the family soon joined him.

In 1971, Henry built their home in Hayward with the help of his sons and daughters. Over the next 15 years, Henry’s children finished their education and formed families of their own. Henry retired in 1983 after more than 10 years at Xerox. In 1997, Henry and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Henry spent most of his retirement years with his wife Mary in the house he and his children built. He worked in his greenhouse and tended to an amazing garden of vegetables, fruit trees, flowers and blackberries. He was a conservationist and ecological pioneer who built an irrigation system that used rain water to grow the fruits and vegetables that kept Mary busy canning and freezing. Henry was known as a man who could fix anything. During this time, he raised chickens for many years and even a pig.

In 2008, after some health issues, Henry and Mary moved to a retirement community in Cupertino.

Henry is survived by four sons, Thomas, Mark, James and Frank; two daughters, Joan Henderson and Celeste Fong; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Irene Masters; and many nieces and nephews.
