John M. Wojtowicz

CONNEAUT — John M. “Yash” Wojtowicz, age 90, of Conneaut, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at the Villa at the Lake.

Yash was born in Conneaut on May 4, 1923, the son of Frank and Mary (Snyder) Wojtowicz. He was a 1941 graduate from Conneaut High School and went to work at the former Nickel Plate Railroad. In February of 1943, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a corporal in the 495th Heavy Engineers Battalion until he was honorably discharged in 1946.

Yash returned to Conneaut and his work at the Nickel Plate and later retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad in 1983 after 43 years of service.

Yash was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and attended mass at St. Frances Cabrini. He was a member of the American Legion Cowle Post #151 and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 472. Yash was an avid golfer most of his life. He loved to look for golf balls on the course. Yash would say, “I only golf on days that end in a Y” and his handicap was the 14 clubs in his golf bag. He played in many of the area golf leagues and also enjoyed bowling and “the senior’s together program” at the Conneaut Human Resource Center. He also enjoyed the bi-annual family reunions at Pymatuning State Park, hunting, knitting, traveling and going to the Casino’s. He loved to ride his motorized tri-cycle, but his most cherished time was being “Papa”.

Most recently he celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at the American Legion Hall.

Yash was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ceceil “Dutch” (Eimers) Wojtowicz; son, James “Robbie”; grandchildren, Jeffrey Wojtowicz and Kayleigh Anne Freeman; and brothers, Edward, Francis, Vincent and George.

He is survived by sons, John M. (Judy) Wojtowicz of Lake City, Fla. and Mark and Terri Wojtowicz of Conneaut; daughters, Delores Shorrab and Jeff Davis of Poland, Ohio, Dorothy and James Sackett of Conneaut, Patricia and Gary Freeman of Charlotte, N.C., Mary Hoff of Ashtabula, Kathlene and Brian Hicks of Dublin, Ohio, and Karyn and Scott Phillips of Wadsworth, Ohio; sister, Rosemary and John Vendetti of Conneaut; 29 +/- one grandchildren, Hailey Nicole, Shelly Marie (Joshua) Glass, John M.
