CONNEAUT — Bud Watson, age 86, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Thursday evening, July 11, 2013, at The Villa At The Lake.
Born Jan. 7, 1927, in Conneaut, he was the son of Frank A. and Nellie M. (Castle) Watson.
A graduate of Rowe High School, he also attended Erie Tech Memorial School and was employed as a machinist for the former Nickel Plate Railroad for a number of years and then went to work at R.M.I., retiring in 1988 with 31 years of service.
He attended Conneaut First Baptist Church.
Bud built and raced stock cars for 28 years and was the “patriarch” of the local Watson racing family. When he was young, he raced against such greats as Lee Petty and Fireball Roberts. He thoroughly enjoyed Nascar racing and local stock car racing, especially watching his sons, grandsons and great-grandsons race. Bud also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Joan (Hazeltine) Watson of Conneaut; three sons, James (Kim) Watson of Conneaut, Ronald (Leanne) Watson Sr. of Ladson, S.C., and William Watson of Monroe Township, Ohio; three step-children, R. Jeffrey Thompson of Orlando, Fla., Janice McMaster of Katy, Texas, and David Thompson of Hudson, N.H.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and more distant relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Shirley; two brothers, Richard and Raymond Watson; and three sisters, Bessie Felde, Edith Butcher and Elizabeth Gildone.
Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 16th, at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Brian Ewig, Interim Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
Calling Hours will be at the Funeral Home on Tuesday from 12 p.m., Noon, until the time of the Service at 2 p.m.
