James L. Cordell

AIKEN, S.C. —

James Lloyd Cordell, of Aiken, S.C., formerly of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly in Springfield, Mo. on May 24, 2014, while attending a family wedding.

Jim was born in Salamanca, N.Y. on July 23, 1927, to William D. and Ruby (Kiser) Cordell. He graduated from Niagara Falls, N.Y. High School in 1945 and enlisted in the United States Navy. After the end of World War II, Jim enrolled at St. Petersburg (Fla.) Junior College, then attended Union College (Schenectady, N.Y.). He graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio in 1951 where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After college, he worked for Hooker Detrex Chemical Company in Ashtabula.

Jim married Barbara Warren on August 23, 1952, in Ashtabula. After a second tour serving in the Navy, they returned to Ashtabula in 1956 to raise their growing family, and he began working for the Ashtabula Bow Socket. ABS moved the family to Auburn, Ind. in 1961 where Jim became the General Manager of Crane Edmund Corporation (an ABS subsidiary) and then to Bloomfield Hills, Mich. in 1966 where he managed a sales office that focused on products for the automotive industry. The family returned to Ashtabula in 1969 when Jim was appointed as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ABS. He left ABS in 1977, and he and Robert Weiner formed Triad Salvage in Ashtabula in 1978. Triad scrapped several lake freighters in the 5 1/2 Slip in the Ashtabula Harbor. He retired from Triad in 1988. Jim was elected to the Board of Directors of Peoples Savings and Loan in 1980, and retired from the Board in 1984. He and Barbara built a retirement home in Aiken, S.C. in 1990 moving seasonally between Ashtabula and Aiken until 2010 when they became permanent residents of South Carolina.

While in Ashtabula, Jim was a member of the Ashtabula Country Club, Elks Club, Ashtabula County Touchdown Club and First Presbyterian Church. For many years, he (along with Gene Gephart and Pat Sheldon) was the voice of Ashtabula County high school football and basketball as a broadcaster for WREO/WFUN AM 970. He received numerous awards from the Touchdown Club for his broadcasting, and was inducted into the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Hall of Fame in 2006. In Aiken, he was a member of the Palmetto Golf Club and Woodside Plantation Country Club, South Aiken Presbyterian Church, the 50+ Club and the Pacer Club. He enjoyed attending USCA Pacer basketball games as well as performances at the Aiken Performing Arts Center. He regularly played golf in the “Dogfight” at the Palmetto.
