KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Gordon Lee Griffey, age 80, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville, Ohio, following a three-year illness.

Born Feb. 27, 1933, in Conneaut, he was the son of Osmer L. and Nydia (Strong) Griffey. He was a graduate of Rowe High School and Ohio University, and served with the Ohio National Guard as Sgt. with Co C 137th.

Through his work career, he was employed at The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co., Rockwell International, and Webb Manufacturing from which he retired in 1995.

A lifelong baseball enthusiast, Gordon played baseball and basketball at Rowe, pitched for Ohio University, and tried out for a professional baseball team in New York. He later played on Shiley’s baseball team in the Glenwood league, and remained active coaching C.L.Y.O. Little League teams and men’s slo-pitch teams.

Gordon was a member of New Leaf United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was active in civic affairs serving as a scout leader when his children were young; was a member of the Conneaut Jaycees; and served on the Conneaut School Board for 13 years. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to many nations, including a medical mission trip to Zimbabwe.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce M. (Galloway) Griffey, whom he married Sept. 7, 1957; two daughters, Joi (Dwaine) Hemphill of Wooster, Ohio, and Dawn (Pat) Griswold of Conneaut, Ohio; three sons, Brian (Chris) Griffey of West Springfield, Pa., Brent (Beth) Griffey of Independence, Ky., and Todd (Judy) Griffey of Dublin, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Janice (Eugene) Albrycht of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Roland “Joe” (Ruth) Griffey of Conneaut, Ohio; and nieces, nephews, and more distant relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carol Wilson.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30th, at New Leaf United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut, Ohio, with Pastor Jan Walsh officiating.

Envelopes will be available at the Church or at the MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, which has charge of arrangements.
