CONNEAUT — John P. Koontz Sr., age 88, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2013, at the Gardens of Western Reserve in Streetsboro, Ohio.

He was born June 23, 1925, in Titusville, Pa., and was the son of Norman C. and Mary Belle (Martin) Koontz, the youngest of four children.

John was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and was later stationed in Bremen, Germany, where he met his lovely Danish wife, Birgit Hess, the love of his life.

He was an avid railroader, a hobby shared by his sons John and Sam, and worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad for many years as a brakeman, conductor, and as a union rep. Many knew him as the man who could fix anything.

Survivors include three children, John Paul Koontz Jr. of Kent, Ohio, Barbara Koontz of London, Ontario, Canada and Nancy Hinkle of Hudson, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Birgit in 1999; an infant daughter, Patricia Ann Koontz; a son, Samuel Henry Koontz in 1992; a daughter, Patricia Ingrid Feightner in 2008; a brother, Norman C. Koontz II; and sisters, Rosemary Harwood and Beatrice Kelley.

Calling Hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, followed by a light lunch from 3 to 5 p.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Buffalo and Main Sts., Conneaut.
