Jane A. Lewis

MADISON — Dorcus Anna Jane (Campbell) Lewis, age 95, of Madison, Ohio, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the Lantern of Madison in Madison.

She was born in 1918 in Painesville, Ohio, and has also lived in Wisconsin, New York City and for many years near Libby, Mont., but with her sister in Madison, since 2001.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Carl Campbell and Jenny Josephine (Bogard) Campbell; and her husband, Ed “Buck or Montana Kid” L. Lewis in 1987, whom she married in 1943. She was also preceded by seven sisters, Opal (Alex) Karolyi, Ursula (James ) Elliott, Esther (Harry) Lockwood, Lorene (James) Aker, Alice (Paul Robinson) (Joseph) Miller, Evelyn (Stanley) Maier and Betty (Harley) Herriwig; and by four brothers, Forrest (Helen) Campbell, Donald (Valerie) Campbell, George (June) (Ina) Campbell and Robert (Joan) Campbell.

Jane is survived by almost fifty nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren as well.

Jane was a professional entertainer, singing with her sisters (known as the “Campbell Sisters” and as the “Stagebrush Sweethearts”) on radio, TV, and performing on stage at State Fairs, Sportsman Shows and Madison Square Garden in New York, as well as performing for the World War II Troops at various USO Camps.

She met her husband, Ed, who became their Manager and her husband just before the war. Ed had trained his horse “Coley Bay”, as well as other horses in Hollywood like Flicka and Thunderhead of 50’s TV and movies. Jane, her sister Lorene, and Ed combined their acts for the next 20+ years, performing thoughout the U.S. and Canada. They moved back to Montana in the 60’s, building and operating the “MK Ranch Steakhouse” located on the “Al-Cari” highway outside Libby and specializing in Bison meat they raised. The Steakhouse is still operating and displays many of Jane and Ed’s western costumes, as well as mounted Elk, Buffalo, Mountain Dahl Sheep and Goats from Ed’s hunting trips up into the Cabinet Mountains, and photographs from magazines in which they were featured.
