GROSSE ILE, Mich. — Paul E. Luoma, age 84, of Grosse Ile, Mich., died Saturday, July 27, 2013.

He was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of John and Martha Luoma. An Eagle Scout and a fullback for the Mariners, he graduated from Harbor High School in 1948.

Drafted in the U.S. Army, he was a reconnaissance sergeant stationed in Augsburg, Germany. While there he received a coveted trophy for physical fitness for his regiment of 1200 troops.

After his discharge, he worked at Lake City Malleable Steel Corporation of Ashtabula and then at Lunn Laminates of Ashtabula making parts for the original Chevrolet Corvette. There he met the love of his life, Carmel Caruso. Married in September of 1954, they went to Mt. Union College, where Paul was president of the Allem Broic Honorary Chemistry Society. He worked part time for Babcock-Wilcox as a chemical technician testing pressure vessels for the Atomic Energy Commission. Paul graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

He worked at Dow Chemical in Midland for a year before he joined BASF Wyandotte Chemical. He worked there for 20 years and had several patents to his name. He was the leader for the BASF junior rifle team and won a trophy for his golfing.

He joined Ford Motor Company as a quality control engineer for 17 years, he traveled to most of the states and several countries before his retirement in 1993.

He and his wife were charter members of St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Grosse, Ile. He was a lifetime member of the American Chemical Society, the American Electroplaters Society and the American Rifle Association.

Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing with his two sons, gardening and scuba diving.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 51 years.

Survivors include two sons, Mark of Ecorse, Mich. and Jeffery (Hope) of Frenchtown Township, Mich.; brother, John (Dixie) of New Brighton, Minn.; sister, Ruth Holthe of Ashtabula, Ohio; four nephews, Jim (Mary) of Maple Grove, Mich., Tim (Cathy) of Deforest, Wis., Dave (Shari) Hazeltine of Kingsville, Ohio and Steve (Tabitha) Hazeltine of Plymouth, Ohio; and a niece, Susan (Chris) Murray of San Diego, Calif.

Funeral Services were held at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Grosse Ile on Tuesday, July 31st. Entombment was at Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery in Huron Township, Mich.
