PERRY — Dr. Anthony R. Uonelli, age 80, of Perry, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Lake West Hospital, after a heart attack at home.
He was born Sept. 14, 1929 and grew up in Ashtabula.
Dr. Uonelli graduated from Ashtabula High School and was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He received his undergraduate degree from Gannon University in Erie, Pa. and earned his D.O. degree from Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Mo.
Dr. Uonelli was an osteopathic physician and Federal Aviation Medical Examiner for 49 years in Perry. He served on the medical staff at Richmond Heights Hospital and Mentor Emergicare Clinic. He was also an affiliate of the Cleveland Clinic.
He was a pilot and flew out of Casement Airport in Painesville. He earned his private, commercial, multiengine, instrument and certified flight instructor-instrument ratings. He was an avid motorcyclist and had an endless array of interests, including an affinity for mechanics.
Dr. Uonelli conducted free physicals for area athletes and loved talking with people.
He was a member of the Ohio Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic Association, American Association of Family Practitioners, Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Elaine J. (Martin) Uonelli; sisters, Christina DiMare of Warren and Eva DelPrince (Roger) of Ashtabula; nephews and nieces, Guy (Emily) DelPrince, Dennis and Darrell Perry, Cynthia Zigmund, Barbara DiMare, Patty (Bill) Allen, Theresa (Bob) Mullins and Diane (Howard) Stern; and dear friends, Doug and Cathy Powell and Robin and Dan Wheeldon. He also leaves his beloved cats, Symphony and Domino.
Preceding Dr. Uonelli in death were his parents, Dominic and Louise (Ray); and his sister, Helen Perry.
A Celebration of the Doctor’s Life is planned for the Summer of 2010.
Contributions in Dr. Uonelli’s name may be made to Lake County Humane Society, International Women’s Air & Space Museum, American Heart Association, United States Aviation Museum or Smile Train.
