JEFFERSON — Harry O. Barnard Jr., age 75, of E. Monroe Circle, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 18, 1934, in Ashtabula, the son of Harry O. and Catherine (Durkovic) Barnard Sr. and had been a lifelong area resident.
A veteran of the United States Army, he proudly served from 1957 to 1962 during which time he traveled all of Europe and was discharged as a Sergeant. Prior to his retirement in 1996, he was employed at Molded Fiberglass as a press operator for 25 years.
A member of the First Church of God in Ashtabula for 62 years, he loved to play the organ and served as the church organist for several years. An avid gardener, he enjoyed taking care of his yard. He also owned the Lunch Box Diner from 1962 to 1965 and had a passion for cooking all types of food. He truly enjoyed traveling all over the western United States with his family, camping and bowling on leagues at ABC Lanes throughout the years. A devoted Cleveland sports fan, he loved the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers.
He is survived by his children, Bernadine Barnard (George Beatman) of Conneaut and David Ray of Ashtabula; grandchildren, Larry (Georgene) Beals Jr., Joseph (Maranda) Beals, Jessie (Tony) Rivera, Megan (Shawn) Dickey, Dylan Wright and Jordyn Ray; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hayden, Jadynn, Nevaeh, Kylie, Chelsea, Elias, Seth, Amber and Aiden; sisters, Anna Leonard of Leesburg, Fla., Shirley Burns of Roaming Shores, Harriet Mathieu of Ashtabula, Kay (Frank) Fisher of Lake Placid, Fla. and Carolyn (Richard) Rice of Bellevue; brothers, John Barnard of Kingsville and Robert Barnard of Anderson, Ind.; his companion of five years, Mary Owens of Jefferson; and his former wife, Mary Lou (Gosche) Ray of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Judy Lynne Barnard and Naomi Welker; brothers, Richard Barnard and James Barnard; and his parents.
Funeral Service will be 12 p.m. Noon, Monday, Nov. 2nd, at the First Community Church of God, 1910 S. Ridge Road W., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Hal Morgan, officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Ashtabula, with full Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post #103.
Calling Hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1st, at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect, Ashtabula and on Monday, at the Church, from 10 a.m. until the time of Service.
Contributions may be made to the First Community Church of God.
