ASHTABULA — Doris Mae Leonard, age 80, passed away Monday morning, June 22, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital, Erie, Pa., after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 2, 1929, the daughter of Harry and Katherine (Powell) Whysong of Cherry Valley.
Doris married William D. Leonard on Jan. 11, 1947, and raised four children. Survivors include three daughters: Karen (Robert) Baty of Muncie, Ind., Cathy (David) Gray of Largo, Fla., and Cindy (Pete) Kissinger of Clearwater, Minn. Doris was also the proud grandmother of ten, and great-grandmother to nine little ones. She is also survived by a brother, Harry Whysong Jr. and his wife, Dorrine, of Ashtabula; and her primary care-givers, Jackie Fagerstrom and Kevin McGinnis.
Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Leonard; a son, William J. Leonard; and an infant brother, Samuel Whysong.
Besides being a homemaker, Doris and her husband had a working farm in Kingsville for many years. Most recently, she was the owner-operator of The Colonial Restaurant in North Kingsville, until she retired to care for her ailing son.
She loved flowers, gardening, and arts and crafts, especially embroidery and quilting. She was an avid reader, and special thanks goes out to the Kingsville Library for supporting her habit.
The family would also like to thank all the people that helped with Doris’ care over the past ten years: Especially the KVFD rescue squads, The ICU and ER Staffs at UH-Conneaut Medical Center, Mike her dedicated home health care nurse, and the skilled professionals at Select Specialty Hospital in Erie, Pa., where Doris spent her final days.
According to Doris’ wishes, a Private Graveside Service will be held for family and close friends at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, 3140 E. Center St., North Kingsville, this Saturday, June 27th, at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Doris‘ name can be made to the Kingsville Library, 6006 Academy Ave., Kingsville, Ohio 44048, the American Lung Association, 6100 Rockside Woods Blvd. #260, Independence, Ohio 44131 or CORE, 204 Sigma Drive, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15238.
