"Corky" Struchen, age 81, of Girard, Pa., died on Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center following an extended illness. Forest L. "Corky" Struchen, age 81, of Girard, Pa., died on Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was born in North Girard (now Lake City) on Jan. 31,1927, a son of the late Everett and Inez (Camp) Struchen. Corky was raised and educated in the Girard and Lake City area, recently receiving his high school diploma from the Girard Area School District. As America was at war, Corky was inducted into the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Princeton during W.W.II. He was again called to serve his country by the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to the Erie area and worked for Erie Malleable Iron as a machinist and later worked for Copes-Vulcan in Lake City as a master machinist, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Girard United Methodist Church. Corky was a founding and life-member of the Springfield VFW Post #4965 and also a life-member of the Girard American Legion Post #494. He had served as Commander for both posts, and also had held all positions of the executive board and board of directors at various times. He was Past Chaplain and Officer in Charge of the Honor Guard and ritual team for many many years. He was a member of the Military Order of the Cooties and past Seam Squirrel there. He was also a life-member of the Siebenbuerger Club in Erie and 25-year member of the Eagles Club in Conneaut. Corky enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, reading, playing pool and cards at the American Legion, and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mardell Pitt; two brothers, Donald J. Struchen in infancy and Fay L. Struchen; also a grandson, Zackery P. Kent. He will be sadly missed by his family which includes his companion with whom he made his home, Erica Struchen, and three daughters, Carri M. Kent and her husband, Chuck, Vickey J. Barker and Twila L. Dewey, all of Conneaut; OH; and two sons, T. Paul Vacanti and his wife, Kim, of Franklin, Pa., and Forest L. "Chip" Struchen Jr. of Erie, Pa. He also has a sister, Maxine Roszell of Seal Beach, Calif.; five brothers, Maynard Struchen of Conneaut, Ohio, Raymond Struchen and his wife, Betty, of Girard, Pa., William Struchen and his wife, Freda, of Rockville, Md., Clyde Struchen of Conneaut, Ohio, and Frank Struchen and his wife, Virginia, of Erie, Pa.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends and family may call on Thursday, May 8, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at DANIEL R. EDDER FUNERAL HOME, 309 Main St. E., Girard, Pa. Services will be held there on Friday, May 9, 2008, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Darrell Greenawalt officiating. Burial will be in Erie County Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors.
