Herndon Monday, May 5, 2008 Star Beacon JEFFERSON — Clifford J. Herndon, age 82, of Dorset Road, in Jefferson, Ohio, died Saturday afternoon, May 3, 2008, at his residence.
Born May 24, 1925, in Lenox Twp., he was the son of John Earl and Julia Alice (Knapp) Herndon, and has been a lifelong resident of Jefferson. Mr. Herndon married Kathryn B. Carlson on April 6, 1946, at the Harris Memorial Presbyterian Church, and they have enjoyed 62 wonderful years of marriage. A Veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corp, he served in World War II. He was an Assistant Supervisor and also a Bridge Foreman for the Ashtabula County Highway Department, instrumental in the refurbishing and rebuilding of all the covered bridges in the county. He retired in 1987 after 28 and a half years with the department. Clifford was a lifelong member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee and usher. He loved spending quality time with his children, grandchildren and his dog, Cody. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; four children, Roger (Sue) Herndon of Lawrenceville, Ga., Larry (Debi) Herndon of Pueblo, Colo., Doug Herndon of Ashtabula, and Pamela Little of Jefferson; six grandchildren, Corey and Christopher Herndon, Bryan and Eric Herndon, and Joseph and Aileen Little; one step-grandchild, Darren Romines; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Abigail Herndon; and two sisters, Betty Jackson of Georgia, and Helen Cobrena of California. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Duane in 1953; his parents, both in 1970; a sister, Carol Stanton in 1985; and a brother, William Herndon in 1990. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Jefferson Home of the FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio 44047, or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004, envelopes will be at the Funeral Home.
