ASHTABULA — Shirley A. Richey, age 79, of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 30, 2008, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Ashtabula, on May 26, 1928, she was the daughter of Robert and Daisy (Keating) Butcher, married Patsy Richey on August 28, 1954, and was an area resident all of her life.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and enjoyed camping, classic car shows, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Shirley was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid collector of Beanie Babies for the youngest members of her family, and also enjoyed spending time with her “Patio” friends at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
In her younger years, Shirley was a frequent volunteer for various organizations including Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Girl Scouts of America and the County Board of Elections. She was also a volunteer at a local hospital.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Patsy Richey; daughters, Suzanne Viall and JoAnne (Robert) Surbella; son Joseph (Wendy) Richey of Ashtabula; daughter, Shirley Christman of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Rochelle (Andrew) Hathy of Jacksonville, Fla., Daniel Viall of Erie, Pa., Gian Surbella, Anthony Richey and Megan Richey of Ashtabula; three great-grandchildren, Dru and Emily Hathy of Jacksonville, Fla., and Austin Shreeve of Dorset, Ohio; sisters, Patsy King of Ashtabula and Winona Stanley of Columbus, Ohio; and brother, Richard Butcher of Ashtabula.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Thomas of Miami, Fla.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, 1200 E. 21 St., Ashtabula, Ohio.
Calling hours will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 2, at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19th Street, Ashtabula, Ohio.
