Eleven Geneva High School seniors receive scholarships

Eleven Geneva High School seniors received a total of 14 scholarships from members of the Harpersfield Ruritans Club at the seniors awards ceremony Thursday.
Nine $750 scholarships were awarded from the Harpersfield Ruritans, and five scholarships were private scholarship awards given by Ruritan members.
“The students all were very good and we had a hard time picking (scholarship winners),” said Harpersfield Ruritans Scholarship Committee Chair Ron Gilbert. “They are very well deserving of the scholarships. Many of them have helped us and worked along side us with many of our fundraisers and events.”
In order to be eligible for the Ruritan Club scholarship, students must have and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average, a minimum ACT score of 19, must be a Harpersfield resident, a high school graduate and be accepted to a college or proprietary school.
Harpersfield Township Trustee and Ruritan member Jim Pristov said the funds are actually held until the recipients have completed their first semester of college and submitted their grades to show they have maintained their GPA.
“The community supports us, and this is our way of supporting the community,” Pristov said. The Ruritans host several fundraisers each year to benefit the scholarship fund, the most recent being the annual chicken dinner on May 18.
Ruritan member Sheryle Daly added, “It’s a community effort that allows us to give these scholarships.”
Students who won the nine Ruritan Club scholarships met the criteria and demonstrated a passion for community service, Pristov said. Those winners are Emily Ball, Martina Drugovich, Andrew Hanchosky, Stephen Jewell, Whitney Leininger, Kirstie Otto, Elyse Pitkin, Kathryn Spencer and Ronald Varckette.
In addition to the Ruritan Club scholarships, members Pristov, Daly and Janie Sibell also gave memorial scholarships to honor loved ones. Ruritan members Louise Pristov and Larry David assisted in presenting the awards.
