Joyce announces service academy nominees

PAINESVILLE — U.S. Congressman Dave Joyce announced, Monday he has nominated 29 students in the 14th Congressional District to the United States service academies, including four local students.

Among the area students nominated area: Benjamin Bunnell, of Ashtabula; Taylor Johnston, of Rock Creek; Jacob Piotrowski, of Geneva; and, Thomasz Niedzwiecki, of Perry All received nominations to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Jacob Piotrowski also has received a nomination to the Air Force Academy.

Congressional nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. There is typically at least one vacancy annually at each of the service academies and the congressman can select up to 10 candidates to fill the vacancy. This year, however, the 14th Congressional District had two vacancies at the Naval Academy and Joyce opted to use them to nominate 20 students to the Naval Academy.
