PV Scholastic Bowl team hopes to bring home winners' title

ANDOVER — “March Madness” is about to spring on Pymatuning Valley High School, but it isn’t just about basketball; upcoming in March are the All-County Scholastic Bowl, Polar Bear Plunge and the spring musical “Guys and Dolls.”

On Monday all of the high schools in Ashtabula County will have a battle of the minds with the All-County Scholastic Bowl at 6:30 p.m. in the Veterans Memorial Performing Arts Center. This year’s scholastic team is composed of seniors, Brianne Roebuck, Tyler Miller, Neil Guman, Laura Copeland, and juniors, Michael Morrison and Justin Dye.

Team adviser Mary “Senora” Pontoni was asked how she felt about her team this year. She stated that she has an excellent team and that she and the team are hungry to bring the All-County Scholastic Bowl winner’s title back home to PV. PV has not won the bowl since the first All County Scholastic Bowl back in the 1980s. At that time, Pontoni was the coach as well. In her return to coaching, the team is hoping to change things around this year.

And the coach has much to be pleased with as the team won the Academic Challenge, which aired Jan. 30 on News Channel 5, and won five out of eight matches at the Joseph Badger Tournament, competing against teams from all around Ohio. Pontoni said she just hopes that the team can keep up their winning streak by clutching the title of All-County Scholastic Bowl Winners 2010.

To keep up their skills, the team practices once a week after school and daily at lunch with different routines like playing “Trivial Pursuit,” reviewing random facts about different subjects and occasionally taking on a battle with the teachers.

Team captain and four-year member Brianne Roebuck was asked what advice she would give to someone interested in joining. “Don’t be afraid of other people’s knowledge because you will be able learn from them and what they know and grow on it,” Roebuck said.
