South Ridge students achieve high honors at state CSO contests

CONNEAUT — “Mary had a little lamb... it followed her to school one day,” so the story goes. Poor Mary had nothing but trouble with her lamb. However, South Ridge Christian Academy students welcomed with great enthusiasm a 3-day-old lamb named Olivia. The Rev. Earl Vautin surprised the kindergarten and second to fourth graders (which includes his granddaughters, kindergartener Emily Rogers and second grader Shelby Rogers) with a visit from the newest addition to his farm. Olivia definitely “made the children laugh and play” as she explored the classroom.

“My grandpa brought her (Olivia) in as a surprise,” said Shelby Rogers. “We let her go and she was looking around and walked under the puzzle table. Then we sat in a circle and she walked around to all of us and we all held her. My grandpa’s the best!”

Vautin explained to the students that because there are so many newborn lambs, they are easily confused as to which ewe is their mother. He went on to say that as their shepherd he knows what is best for the sheep and he knows where each belongs. He compared this to how Jesus, as the “Good Shepherd” knows how to take care of His “sheep.”

Congratulations are extended to the SRCA students who participated in the Christian Schools of Ohio competition. The CSO competition is organized to provide a challenge toward excellence in academics and in fine arts among the hundreds of students in fundamental Christian schools throughout the state.

Students compete in various events such as instrumental solos, speeches, vocal performances, photography, arts, crafts, science projects, written testing, spelling bees, team challenge, puppets, sewing, woodworking and more.

At the competition, students earn a rating from the judges’ scores of either a 1 (91-100 percent), a 2 (81-90 percent) or a 3 (71-80 percent). Students can also earn individual awards depending on the score they achieve. If they attain one of the top three highest scores, they are recognized at a rally and given a metal or trophy. Many SRCA students earned ratings of 1 or 2 in their events. Some were even honored to receive the top overall place awards.

Senior Crystal Emus earned overall first place in physics testing. Senior Amanda Pulaski earned overall first place in music theory testing as well as first place in family and consumer sciences. She also earned overall second place in piano solo and third place in Old Testament testing. Eighth graders Victoria Watson, Joshua Pulaski, Tyler Fralic and Delanie Zetlaw earned overall first place in their vocal quartet. Victoria Watson also earned overall first place in speech. Junior Crystal Watson earned overall first place in art and first place in New Testament testing along with second place in Old Testament testing and second place in music theory testing. Junior High Bible Team Challenge, eighth graders Victoria Watson, Joshua Pulaski, Delanie Zetlaw, Ryan Westerberg and seventh grader Seth Rzeszutek, won second place.

The schools are awarded points from all of their students’ scores as well. At the end of the competition, all school points are tallied and the three schools with the highest points are recognized. The school receiving first place receives a trophy. This year, SRCA was honored to earn second place.

“I have always had a great time at CSO and it made my senior year even better since we did so well,” said Amanda Pulaski. “Though it took a lot of time and effort, I’m still going to miss all the preparation and the competition. Our school’s getting second place is an honor. Hopefully SRCA will do as well or better next year!”

Not to be forgotten, the elementary students will be having their junior competition April 20 to 22. As the 2008-2009 academic year is coming to a close, SRCA students remain busy with many year-end events. Grand Splendor, held to honor the senior class, will be April 24. The Spring Retreat will be April 30 to May 2. The senior class trip will be May 4 to 7 and the 36th annual graduation will be held on May 8. The calendar for the 2009-2010 school year is already being prepared, but that’s another story... In the meantime, SRCA will finish this year well!
