Fiesta Week makes for fun learning at Pymatuning Valley Pymatuning Valley High School with JON YORK & BECCA MAGYAR Star Beacon ANDOVER — You could say that it is spring training here at Pymatuning Valley High School. With the end of a very successful winter sports season, spring sports are kicking off. The girls and boys track teams have been conditioning for a few weeks now and will open their season up on March 31 with a meet at PVHS.
The baseball and softball teams will be going to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for spring break to play in tournaments; this will be like the Cleveland Indians playing their spring ball in Arizona – warm and sunny after this long winter. The PV FFA is kicking off the spring right with the “Spring Fling” dance on Friday. Karen Cooley, PV FFA adviser has made the dance an annual tradition for the end of the Ohio Graduation Test testing week. In other annual traditions, The PV PRIDE Committee will be sponsoring the annual Spring Week, which will be held March 30 to April 3. The theme of this year’s Spring Week is going to be “Fiesta.” Fiesta Week is headed up by Patty Andrews, Kristen Webker and Andrea Wonderling. The PRIDE Committee will have a set schedule of events for each day for the students. “The purpose of this whole week is for the students to have fun,” Andrews said. This was a philosophy embraced by our very missed principal, Jeff Meddock, and it is something that will continue to stick with the PV community as we keep in mind that the serious business of learning does not have to be boring. One of the goals for PVHS is to increase school pride each year, and this is a great way to do just that. The first activity of Spring Week is a door decorating contest. Doors will be decorated the week of March 23 so that they are ready to Fiesta the following week. On Monday of “Fiesta Week” the students will receive their “passports” where they can collect stamps throughout the week for attendance and by answering questions correctly that will be asked to all of the students. Wonderling has designed the passports and they will be distributed to students in homeroom. This is a new feature this year for the week, and Wonderling said the purpose of the passport is to help students remember what each day’s activity is and to have a way to track their involvement. On Tuesday, there will be a Mexican scavenger hunt around the school where students will look for chile peppers and sombreros. Collecting the peppers and sombreros is only part of the hunt – students then have to answer the question found on the objects. On Wednesday, there will be mustache contest. On Thursday, it will be sombrero day. All of the students get to wear a big Mexican hat to school and the best sombreros will be judged on PVTV. The week’s activities culminate on Friday - design your own serape day, and again, students will be in a contest for the best serapes. For lunch on that Friday, students will be treated to Mexican fried ice cream. At the end of the day on Friday, there will be an assembly held where all of the spring sports teams will be introduced. At the assembly there will be a limbo contest, hot tamale basketball, Mexican dancing and a cactus toss. Throughout the week, students will be rewarded with PV Bucks by doing activities and wearing the fiesta gear. Principal Jeremy Huber will be making guest appearances during Fiesta Week to check students for their knowledge of Spanish phrases. Huber is also rumored to be dressing up for these guest appearances. The PRIDE Committee has once again designed a way to incorporate learning into a fun and spirited week leading up to spring break.
