Lakeside National Honor Society collects hygiene products for local organizations

— SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Lakeside High School students have started out the new semester in a philanthropic manner. Whether it is giving people a reason to laugh with student surveys, helping with community projects or being involved in local sporting events, our students have been ready to participate. We, as a school, have been helping with the Polar Bear Plunge by getting volunteers and aiding with sponsorships. Lisa Raffa has been an active supervisor for LHS and one way we are contributing to the Polar Bear Plunge is by nominating student athletes from the different sports teams to compete against each other. The money we receive, along with the donations from across Ohio, will benefit the Ohio Special Olympics.
Additionally the National Honor Society has recently collected hygiene products, including toothbrushes, soap and shampoo, to help stock various community organizations. NHS also sold carnations for Valentine’s Day during the three lunch periods over a span of two weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day weekend. Patricia Stauffeneger, NHS adviser, helped members by coordinating a flower sale along with the collection and distribution of the hygiene products. The proceeds will be used toward the National Honor Society fund and the induction ceremony of the new member in the spring.
NHS members received approximately $600 through their sale.
Furthermore, the junior class just completed a popular fund-raiser. This was a fun survey to see which students are compatible. Each set of computerized results cost $1. Rachel Householder, one of Lakeside’s newest teachers, is in charge of the junior class. Money brought in by this event went to the class of 2010 which has been working hard to raise money for the prom in the spring.
But let’s not forget about the members of Lakeside Performing Arts who are gearing up for another play, “The Wiz,” which is a more modern and citified version of “The Wizard of Oz.” Performances will be 7:30 p.m. on March 13 and 14 and 2 p.m. March 15. Andrea Tredent is in charge of the play and Aubrey Wright holds the lead role as Dorothy. “The Wiz” is double casted, meaning different people are involved in every performance. Elementary students are also involved, acting as munchkins for the play.
