ASHTABULA — As the last days of winter approach and signs of spring begin to appear, the Ss. John and Paul family has been keeping busy with a variety of activities. In the high school, junior and senior students are busy applying for admittance into the National Honor Society. There has been a chapter at Ss. John and Paul for many years now, and it is an honor for which all eligible students vie. Induction will take place March 4 in Mahon-ey Gymnasium. Current NHS students will help conduct the ceremony.

At the elementary school, students have been celebrating Black History Month by learning about many notable African Americans both past and present. For example, the first grade learned about Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama, Louis Armstrong and Jackie Robinson.

“It was exciting to learn about all the great accomplishments these people had and how we can be more like them,” said first grade teacher Elizabeth Malacki.

The elementary students have also been studying animals. The second grade has been learning about penguins and their habitats, as well as the food chain. First grade has been working hard using many materials to learn about different animals and presented their findings to their classmates in a project.

Lately, the second grade has been taught about different careers from a series of different speakers.

“We’ve had Carrie Northrup-Olson, Judge (Charles) Hague, Laurie Schulze and Jerry Powers speak to the children about their careers. We have other community helpers who will be speaking to the children throughout the remainder of the year,” said second-grade teacher Carla Robinson.

The second grade is hastily preparing for their First Holy Communion this May. To prepare, the students are learning about the parts of Mass and have been discussing the connection between the Passover, the Last Supper and Mass.

Third grade is being taught about the solar system and are reinforcing what they are told in many different in creative ways. The students were asked to create their own mnemonic devices to re-member the order of the planets. One of the devices, created by Nick Hammers, is as follows: “Mom Values Every Moment Just Sleeping Until Noon.”

Third graders have also discovered what happens during a solar eclipse using plastic foam balls to represent the earth and the moon and a flashlight to represent the sun.

As the end of the school year comes closer and closer, the students at Ss. John and Paul have no desire to slow down. Through various activities and events, the Heralds always have a full schedule, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
