Falcons torch Red Devils

Jefferson seniors go out in style

JEFFERSON — The Jefferson girls basketball team is a close bunch. On Saturday night, the Falcons played for each other and netted a 71-23 All-American Conference victory over Campbell Memorial at Falcon Gymnasium.

“The seniors picked us up,” Jefferson coach Rod Holmes said. “I think the underclassmen really wanted to play well for the seniors tonight. It really is a tight group of players.

“I thought the girls handled the situation well. It was a good feeling. We got a lot of people in the game. The nice thing was, when they came off, they were rooting for the younger kids, too.”

“We’ve played together for four years,” senior Ariann Barile said. “When your part of a team, it’s your second family. I wanted to play for them.”

“Yep,” senior Sarah Busch added.

For the Falcons (8-13, 3-7), it was nice to finish their home schedule with a victory after struggling against good competition in recent weeks. And the seniors did it together, maybe for the first time in their careers.

“That was the first time all four of us (seniors) were on the floor at the same time during a game,” Busch said.

“It was nice to go out and prove ourselves after so many games in which we struggled,” senior Mary Forbes said.

After falling behind, 3-0, over the first 3:18, the Falcons outscored the Red Devils 36-1 over the next 12:42 and led, 36-4, at the half. Included in that stretch was a 22-0 second quarter in which Holmes used the vast majority of his roster.

“We had 10 girls play in the (second) quarter,” Holmes said. “The thing was, there were 10 girls who got on the floor and there was no let up.”

Senior LeeAnn Farr tallied 12 points and eight rebounds during that stretch, Lindsey Becker netted seven, Busch and Deanna Comp each scored five.

It was Farr’s inspired play that set the tone.

“It was just a big adrenaline rush before the game,” Farr said. “It was the last time I was going to play in this gym with these girls. I wanted to go out with a bang.”

“I thought she picked us up tonight,” Holmes said. “She really did.”

Jefferson turned the ball over just 12 times and forced 21 turnovers themselves. The Falcons recorded 18 steals in the contest.

Farr finished with 18 points, 12 boards and five steals. Busch had 12 points and four assists and Becker had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Busch connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter.

“She hit some 3’s,” Holmes said. “That’s what got us going in the third quarter.”

Joanna Villanueva paced Campbell Memorial (0-19, 0-10) with 12 points.

Campbell Memorial coach Kevin Douglas was unavailable for comment after the game.
