‘Thunder and Lightning’ are true Ringers

Apologies, Mr. Ringer, but you’re going to have to spring for an extra sweathshirt.

Afterall, the “Thunder and Lightning” combination of the Edgewood Warriors — Anthonie Magda and Riis Smith — took Beaver Local by storm last week.

Magda, aka Thunder, rushed for 191 yards on only 7 carries — an unfathomable average of 23.7 yards per carry — and scored two touchdowns, including one from 98 yards.

Smith, aka Lightning, had a dozen carries for an even 200 yards — a stellar average of 16.7 yards per attempt — and also scored two touchdowns.

First-year coach Josh Franke’s Warriors rolled to their third win in a row, 31-10, against the Beavers.

For their efforts, “Thunder and Lightning” are the Ringer Screen Print Week 6 Ashtabula County Players of the Week.

They follow in the footsteps of previous 2013 Ringer winners Aaron Rossi of Geneva, Cole Erdel of Jefferson, Tyler Loftus of Lakeside, Troy Colucci of Conneaut and Brandon Pakkala of Geneva.

For their efforts at Beaver Local, Magda and Smith will receive hooded sweatshirts — courtesy of RSP bigwig and former Harbor Mariners legend John Ringer — at the 2013 Ashtabula County Touchdown Club dinner and awards banquet, which will be held Monday, Dec. 9 at Mount Carmel.

  • Complete performance

It has taken a while for the Grand Valley Mustangs to put it all together on the softball diamond this season. Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs did just that, combining a superb pitching effort by Katie Paskey with a tight defense and opportune offense to smother the Maplewood Rockets, 8-1, in Northeastern Athletic Conference action.

  • Pirates sail past Eagles

The seniors on the Perry softball team wanted to talk with coach Frank Rico. They had some ideas for how their coach could help the Pirates. Rico was receptive of the players’ thoughts. It didn’t hurt that the Pirates were right on the mark in their assessments.

The top of the Cleveland lineup has been starting to hit. If that continues, it will bode very well for the team.
