On stage

With NFL teams going into what is termed their “final dress rehearsals” this weekend, so, too, are the high school football teams across the Buckeye State.

All 10 teams in the Star Beacon coverage area will go through their last preseason workouts against opposition come Thursday and Friday.

Coach Tim Willis’ Madison Blue Streaks will get a jump on the rest of the teams in the area as they will be the lone squad in action Thursday night.

Madison will host perennial power Lake Catholic that night at Blue Streak Memorial Stadium, with kickoff set for 7.

One of the best football players in Ashtabula County history, Mike Bell, is the head coach of the Cougars.

Bell, a former standout player for Pyamtuning Valley, is a member of the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame.

Here’s a complete rundown of the whos, the whats, the wheres and the whens of what’s on tap on the scrimmage menu this week:

Thursday

Friday

As always, if there are snafus with those details, please don’t shoot the messenger as the information was gleaned from school officials.

For example, both Geneva and PV changed the starting times for their respective scrimmages and let us know... so we could let you know, Loyal Readers.

Kind words

The note in this space about Jim Bollman landing on his feet at Michigan State University in the staff of head coach Mark Dantonio prompted a response from Lance Hammond, a former great player at Jefferson, from which he graduated in 1985, then earned a full scholarship to North Carolina State University.

“Coach Bollman recruited me to NC State many years ago,” Hammond, a member of the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame, said. “He is a terrific guy who was always honest and helpful during my transition from high school to college.

“I’m glad to hear he is still working in the game.”

Former Star Beacon sports editor Darrell Lowe, who taught yours truly more about writing and newspaper design than anyone (it’s all his fault!), passed along a story in the Detroit Free Press about Bollman, a former Harbor High School star and also a member of the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame, serving as co-offensive coordinator for the Spartans with Dave Warner.

Lowe, an Ohio State University graduate, is hanging his hat in Columbus.
