Good as gold!

Maddy Triskett, Zach Mayle capture state championships in KOC Free-Throw contest

— The youth of Ashtabula County have been mining plenty of gold in recent weeks and it continued over the weekend in Columbus.

Maddy Triskett and Zach Mayle even earned state championships at the Knights of Columbus State Free-Throw Shooting contest.

Maddy, the daughter of Tom and Kim Triskett, and Zach, the son of Tim and Debbie Mayle, each earned spots atop the 9-year-old podium in the first year the program has been opened to anyone other than 10-14 year-olds.

Maddy made good on 16 of 25 free-throw attempts, which earned her a tie for the top spot on the girls side.

That thrust her into a shootoff, which turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

For all the future Mustang standout did was connect on all five of her attempts in the shootout to capture the gold medal.

Turns out, Zach didn’t even need a shootoff to capture his crown.

The future Eagle star blistered the cords, nailing a spectacular 23 of 25 attempts from the charity stripe to run away and hide from the competition.

Winning a state championship in the Knights of Columbus State Free-Throw contest is nothing new for the Mayle family.

Zach’s sister, Lindsey, the terrific second-team All-Ohio point guard for coach Nancy Barbo’s Division II district champion Geneva Eagles, was a multi-team state champion in the same contest during her younger days.

Shooters across the Buckeye State had better be prepared, too, as being 9-year-olds, Maddy and Zach have five more years of eligibility to take part in the competition.

Although the Indians are still very much mathematically alive in the race for a postseason berth, they continue not to look like a playoff team. And when they have put a run together, they haven’t been able to maintain the habit of playing winning baseball.
