Area’s Fab 4

Geneva’s Mayle second-team All-Ohioan; Zappitelli, Smock, Levkulich also honored

A quartet of area players — led by a high-flying Geneva Eagle — were accorded honors Monday evening when The Associated Press announced its Division II and Division I All-Ohio selections.

Geneva point guard Lindsey Mayle, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, earned the highest recognition of the four area players named to the Division II squad.

The point guard who led coach Nancy Barbo’s Eagles to the second regional appearance in program history (the other being in the 2009-10 season) by planting top-seeded East Tech in the championship game of the Lakeside sectional-district tournament, received second-team recognition.

Mayle is one of only three non-juniors or seniors on either the first or second team in Division II, leading the Eagles in scoring, free-throw shooting and 3-pointers.

She is joined in All-Ohioan status by Conneaut’s Lexi Zappitelli, Jefferson’s Emily Smock and Perry’s Brittany Levkulich.

The area was not represented on the Division I squad.

Zappitelli earned special-mention recognition, while Smock and Levkulich were accorded honorable-mention honors.

Zappitelli, a 5-9 junior, led Conneaut in both scoring and rebounding.

Smock, 5-7 and like Mayle, a sophomore, led Jefferson in scoring, free-throw shooting, 3-pointers and was second in rebounding.

Levkulich, a 5-7 junior guard, was Perry’s leading scorer this season.

All four players, being non-seniors, will be returning to their respective squads when practice tips off for the 2014-15 season Friday, Nov. 21.

The Division III and Division IV AP All-Ohio squads will be announced tonight, with Jeff Compan and his Pymatuning Valley Lakers and Grand Valley’s Jessica Vormelker expected to receive recognition.

Ohio’s Ms. Basketball will be announced later in the week.

Although the Indians are still very much mathematically alive in the race for a postseason berth, they continue not to look like a playoff team. And when they have put a run together, they haven’t been able to maintain the habit of playing winning baseball.
