District’s best honored

Area well represented on Northeast Lakes squad

Though they finished right around the break-even mark, the area’s Division IV football teams were well represented on the Northeast Lakes All-District Team.

Edgewood linebacker Anthonie Magda leads the way, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors. Teammate Matt Fitchet is a first-team offensive lineman as is Conneaut’s J.J. Lower.

Perry’s Luke Farrell is a first-team defensive lineman and fellow Pirate Kyle Kremiller is a first-team linebacker. Riis Smith of Edgewood is a first-team defensive back.

On the second team are quarterback Troy Colucci and running back C.J. Rice of Conneaut, lineman Brandon Hagerdon of Jefferson, defensive lineman Jarrod Harrah and linebacker Alex Sturgill of Edgewood, linebackers R.J. Nelson of Conneaut and Justin Butler of Jefferson and defensive back Cole Erdel of Jefferson.

In Division V, Jake Vormelker of Grand Valley is a first-team quarterback and teammate Glenn Zaller is a first-team defensive lineman. Quintin Ratliff of Pymatuning Valley is the first-team punter.

Jason Hart is a second-team wide receiver and Luke Baldwin is a second-team linebacker. The Lakers’ Ryan Wilkerson is a second team defensive lineman.

Madison and Riverside were well represented in Division II after appearing in the state playoffs and Lakeside garnered some attention, as well.

Madison running back Brandon Davis and Lakeside tight end Nick Meola are members of the first-team offense.

Defensive lineman Jarred Patton of Lakeside, linebackers Ricky Simcic of Madison and Ross Dawson of Riverside and defensive back Jarred Yoe of Madison are members of the first-team defense. The Beavers’ Adam Horvat is the first-team punter.

Riverside running back Marcus Jones and receiver Aaron Petruccelli and offensive lineman Kurt Smith of Madison are members of the second-team offense.

Defensive lineman Drew Schiemann and defensive back Nick Law of Madison are on the second-team defense.

Geneva, the only area team in Division III, has running back Aaron Rossi, receiver Austin Clutter defensive lineman Matt Kozlowski on the first team.

Quarterback Brandon Pakkala and offensive lineman Austin Williams are on the second team.

  • Advantage, Diemer

    Every pitcher wants to get the advantage against every batter she faces. Edgewood lefty Taylor Diemer gave herself that edge and it proved to be key as the Warriors topped Madison, 1-0, Friday at Edgewood.

  • Spartans knock around Dragons

    After being cooped up in gymnasiums for the better part of the season so far, the Conneaut and Lakeside softball teams were just happy to get onto a diamond. Playing for the first time in nearly a week, the Spartans toppled the Dragons, 11-2, Thursday afternoon at Lakeside.

  • PV can’t get past Mathews

    Thursday afternoon at Pymatuning Valley, the visiting Mathews Mustangs were able to do what every coach hopes for — execute. They played a clean game from start to finish in every facet of the game, and that carried the Mustangs to an 8-2 Northeastern Athletic Conference victory.
