Runners ready for state

Area will be well represented on cross country’s biggest stage

When the 2013 state cross country kicks off at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron on Saturday, the Star Beacon coverage area will be very well represented.

Back for the second-straight year will be Edgewood junior Chris LeMay.

LeMay won’t be going alone this time, though. He’ll be joined by his teammate and twin brother, Josh.

Both had interesting paths to the state meet. As expected, Chris cruised to his-second straight trip to state, running 16:58.85 at the Division II regional in Boardman.

Josh, on the other hand, looked to be rolling to state before he was knocked down, but was able recover and qualify in the 16th and final spot, running a 17:05.37.

Also in Division II, Perry’s Aaron Gessic qualified with a sixth-place finish in a time 16:57.07.

The Division II boys race will begin at 2:15 at National Trail Raceway on Saturday.

On the girls side, in Division I Lakeside’s Karen Barrientos will make her debut at the state meet.

Barrientos ran a 19:31.27 at the Division I regional in Boardman last weekend, qualifying in 15th place.

Also in Division I, Madison’s Hilary Reigle, who is also a standout on the Blue Streaks tennis team, will compete after running 19:25.98 at Boardman, that was good enough for 13th place.

The Division I girls race begins at 12:30 on Saturday.

Rounding out Saturday’s competition will be the Division II girls.

Geneva’s Emily Deering is the top area qualifier in the event. The Eagles runner, who also competed at the state track and field meet in 2012, finished sixth in at the Division II regional in Boardman, running a 19::39.59.

Returning to the state meet for the second-straight year is Grand Valley’s Jessica Finley.

Finley made it to Hebron as a freshman in 2012 and will look to improve upon that finish. The Mustangs sophomore qualified in ninth place with a time of 19:48.24.

The Division II girls race begins at 12:30 on Saturday.

  • Advantage, Diemer

Every pitcher wants to get the advantage against every batter she faces. Edgewood lefty Taylor Diemer gave herself that edge and it proved to be key as the Warriors topped Madison, 1-0, Friday at Edgewood.

  • Spartans knock around Dragons

After being cooped up in gymnasiums for the better part of the season so far, the Conneaut and Lakeside softball teams were just happy to get onto a diamond. Playing for the first time in nearly a week, the Spartans toppled the Dragons, 11-2, Thursday afternoon at Lakeside.

  • PV can’t get past Mathews

Thursday afternoon at Pymatuning Valley, the visiting Mathews Mustangs were able to do what every coach hopes for — execute. They played a clean game from start to finish in every facet of the game, and that carried the Mustangs to an 8-2 Northeastern Athletic Conference victory.

  • Don A Don McCormack column: ‘Kids’ stuff’ spurs great responses

I’m often caught more than a bit off-guard by what stories, features or columns generate responses from you, Loyal Readers, much more so than those who do not.
For example, the column that appeared in this space a couple of days ago regarding things yours truly and my buddies did as kids prompted more than a few responses.
A sampling, many of which were posted on my Facebook page:
