Radio waves

Dave Miller, program director for ESPN 970 WFUN, has released the radio station’s 2013-14 boys basketball broadcast schedule.

The slate includes 15 regular-season games.

Miller will once again handle the play-by-play duties, with Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Hall of Famer and former Geneva basketball star and head coach Brad Ellis providing his expertise as the color commentator.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 10 — Edgewood at Jefferson.
  • Friday, Dec. 13 — Madison at Lakeside.

Miller said the schedule is subject to change and postseason coverage will be included as well.

Eight of the 12 teams in the Star Beacon coverage area appear on the announced schedule. Geneva (6) appears the most times, with Lakeside (5), Edgewood (5), Jefferson (5), Madison (2), Conneaut (1) and Grand Valley (1) rounding it out. Not scheduled to be broadcast are area schools Pymatuning Valley, Riverside, St. John and Grand River Academy.

Other radio or television stations broadcasting games this season are encouraged to send their schedules our way.

Let there be light

Attention, those who bleed Pymatuning Valley maroon and gold — the deadline to sign up for the Light Up Laker Stadium alumni flag football game is less than a week away.

Deadline to sign up is Friday.

The game will be played the night before Thanksgiving — Wednesday, Nov. 27. Proceeds for the event will go toward the fund to purchase new lighting for Laker Stadium, which is still utilizing the lights that were used at PV’s former home field on Chestnut Street and moved to Laker Stadium when it opened more than three decades ago.

The game will feature players from all eras. Cost is $25 per player and teams will be determined based on how many people sign up. The format will be 7 on 7 with two games taking place simultaneously at each end of the field.

There will also be a womens’ division if there is enough interest.

Alumni band, cheerleaders, color guard, etc. are also encouraged to participate.

The teams will be coached by Ashtabula County Football Hall of Famers and former PV head coaches Joe Kearney and Ken Parise.

Anyone wanting to participate can sign up online at and print the form and mail it with a check payable to PV Athletic Boosters to:

PV Laker Lights

PO Box 954

Andover, Ohio 44003.

The fee enables each participant to take part and to receive a souvenir jersey.

Admission to the game will be $5 for adults and $ for students.

Let’s face it — we will never know exactly what a gobbler is thinking. However, we have a good idea of what his motives are during the spring. In one word, girls, he’s waitin’ on a woman.

Every pitcher wants to get the advantage against every batter she faces. Edgewood lefty Taylor Diemer gave herself that edge and it proved to be key as the Warriors topped Madison, 1-0, Friday at Edgewood.
