Perry Township – “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” That old adage isn’t always so true. The Upper Reds of the Buckeye and Perry communities met once earlier this season and saw the Perry team come back from a halftime deficit to take the win. Buckeye (4-4) once again had a halftime lead and saw the Perry Red team come right out after halftime to drive the length of the field to tie the score. The Warriors made a second impression this time as Aaron Anderson hit a quick screen pass to Aaron Pocatko (70 total yards 1 TD) who turned it into a game changing touchdown run after the catch. Anderson (67 yards rushing 1 TD, 80 yards passing 1TD) had started the scoring in the game on the first play from scrimmage when he broke free to the outside and outran everyone for a 65 yard touchdown. Dylan Fitchet (27 total yards) and Nick Monda (20 total yards) also added to the Warrior offense.
Defensively, the Buckeye squad was led by Anderson with 10 tackles, Monda had 8 tackles, Jacob Zappitelli had 7 tackles, Pocatko and Adam Talso both had 5 tackles and one fumble recovery each, Jacob Tackett, Ryan Bento, and Hayden Kanicki all had 3 tackles, Kobe Williams and Hugh Flanigan (1 fumble recovery) both had two tackles apiece.
The win propels the Upper Red to their conference championship game Saturday at 3:30 at Alumni Stadium.
This is the first time the Buckeye Community Midget Football League has qualified three teams for the conference finals in the same season.
Lower Geneva Red will play Lower Conneaut Blue in the other conference final at Alumni Stadium at noon.
