Jefferson, Edgewood, Perry, Conneaut clustered as seeds in baseball

The area’s five teams, when it comes to Division II baseball, should form a bit of a pack mentality.

For at the draw for the Jefferson Division II sectional-district tournament Sunday, four of the area’s five teams in the field were seeded consecutively — fourth through seventh.

Coach Scott Barber’s Jefferson Falcons (11-6) are the tournament’s fourth seed, followed closely by coach Bill Lipps’ Edgewood Warriors (11-4).

Perry (9-10), is seeded sixth, with Conneaut (9-7) seventh.

Geneva (5-9) is the 10th seed in the 13-team field.

The sectional games will be played May 13 and May 14 at home sites, with the district games moving to the Havens Complex in Jefferson Township.

Those games will be played May 20 and May 21.

Chagrin Falls, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and West Geauga are the top three seeds in the field.

Jefferson will play 12th-seeded Orange (2-13) in a sectional-semifinal at Cotton Field on May 13, with the winner getting third-seeded West Geauga (11-5) in a sectional championship contest.

Edgewood and Geneva will meet in a first-round game at Higgins Field on May 13, with the winner getting the survivor of a first-round matchup featuring area squads Perry and Conneaut in a sectional final the next night.

The rest of the field includes eighth-seeded University School (6-8), ninth-seeded Lake Catholic (6-13), 11th-seeded Harvey (3-14) and 13th-seeded Warrensville Heights (1-10).

  • Complete performance

It has taken a while for the Grand Valley Mustangs to put it all together on the softball diamond this season. Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs did just that, combining a superb pitching effort by Katie Paskey with a tight defense and opportune offense to smother the Maplewood Rockets, 8-1, in Northeastern Athletic Conference action.

  • Pirates sail past Eagles

The seniors on the Perry softball team wanted to talk with coach Frank Rico. They had some ideas for how their coach could help the Pirates. Rico was receptive of the players’ thoughts. It didn’t hurt that the Pirates were right on the mark in their assessments.
