Welcome home

Edgewood graduates return to compete at Division I track meet at Spire

HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — Two Edgewood High School graduates were excited to be back home Saturday during the Division I Track and Field Invitational Saturday at Spire Institute.

Cody Chabola, competing for Eastern Michigan University, and Mallory Kreider, competing for Ohio State, were happy to be performing in front of friends and family.

Kreider ran the 5000 meters on Friday night in a time of 17:31 (about 25 seconds off her best time run last year at Spire Institute) and came back Saturday with a 10:07 in the 3000 meters winning her heat with a sprint at the end of the race.

“I’ll take it because I’ve been improving each week,” Kreider said following the race.

She is confident her new coach is preparing her to peak at the end of the year.

Kreider said she is really excited about the Big 10 championship coming to Ashtabula County later this month. She said she has not yet qualified but hopes to run here in two weeks.

Kreider also said she hopes there will be a lot of area track fans at the meet in two weeks.

Chabola ran the 3000 meters in a time of 8:51 and was excited to be running in front of friends and family.

“It’s great,” Chabola said. “I got to see my mom and aunt last (Friday) night.”

He said the track meets are usually far from home so relatives are unable to come.

Don Gill, a former track coach and athletic director at Edgewood High School, was excited to see such a great meet in Ashtabula County.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Gill said while watching the meet. “It’s hard to explain.”

All the parking lots at Spire Institute were packed as the track meet shared facility space with a high school swim meet and a volleyball tournament.

The NCAA track meet included more than 30 universities across the country including Ohio State, Michigan, Southern Methodist University and numerous schools from Canada.

Area volunteers helped make the event a success with area residents working in a variety of positions ranging from parking cars to providing information for visitors.

Jeremy Verdi, Madison track coach, was the announcer for the meet.

  • Complete performance

It has taken a while for the Grand Valley Mustangs to put it all together on the softball diamond this season. Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs did just that, combining a superb pitching effort by Katie Paskey with a tight defense and opportune offense to smother the Maplewood Rockets, 8-1, in Northeastern Athletic Conference action.

  • Pirates sail past Eagles

The seniors on the Perry softball team wanted to talk with coach Frank Rico. They had some ideas for how their coach could help the Pirates. Rico was receptive of the players’ thoughts. It didn’t hurt that the Pirates were right on the mark in their assessments.
