A Don McCormack column: PV could outsmart its foes, too

Paying a Monday morning visit to the variety store...

Sharp girls

Not only were the Pymatuning Valley Lakers fantastic on the hardwood this winter, but turns out, coach Jeff Compan’s squad was pretty darn terrific in the classroom, too.

The Lakers, who finished 25-1 and won NAC and Division III sectional and district championships, were one of five girls squads in the state to be named Academic All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association.

Compan’s crew finished with a combined 3.887 grade-point average. PV joined Westfall High School, Ironton St. Joseph High School, Waverly High School and Carey High School as being named All-Ohio as a squad.

Geena Gabriel, the Star beacon Ashtabula County co-Player of the Year along with Lindsey Mayle of Geneva, was one of 10 players in Division III to be accorded individual Academic All-Ohio recognition.

She was joined on the Division III list by Alexandra Rice of Greenview, Rachel Myers of Liberty-Benton, Hannah Miller and Kathryn Miller of Canton Central Catholic, Leanna Adkins of Oak Hill, Allison Wank of Woodmore, Emily Williams of Frederickstown and Courtney Putt of Garaway.

Gabriel, a senior who shared recognition as the top player in the county with Mayle, a sophomore, sports a 3.73 grade-point average.

On the floor, the standout point guard led the Lakers by averaging 18.3 points per game.

The annual Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation dinner and awards banquet will be held Sunday at the Conneaut Human Resources Center.

The ACBF, which is celebrating is 12th anniversary this spring, was the brainstorm of trustees Mike Joslin and Nick Iarocci.

The organization will welcome 15 members into its Hall of Fame.

Social gathering will tip things off at 2:30, with awards commencing at 3.

Tickets are $30 for adults, $10 for students and members of the Hall of Fame, whose stories have been chronicled in terrific fashion by retired Star Beacon sportswriter Chris Larick, himself, along with late Star Beacon sports editors Karl Pearson and Milton Alfred, a member of the ACBF Hall of Fame.

To purchase tickets before you hit the door Sunday, call 593-6880 and seats are first-come, first-serve.

Paying another visit to the variety store...

    On the mend

  • Tribe Not quite enough

Although the Indians are still very much mathematically alive in the race for a postseason berth, they continue not to look like a playoff team. And when they have put a run together, they haven’t been able to maintain the habit of playing winning baseball.
