Pair of Warriors, 1 Falcon named All-Ohio

Edgewood’s McLaughlin, Kalil, Jefferson’s Chase honored in D-II

— Edgewood and Jefferson were the dominant Division II schools in the area during the recently concluded 2013-14 high school boys basketball season.

Accordingly, coach John Bowler’s Warriors and coach Steve French’s Falcons pulled in the honors on the Associated Press Division II All-Ohio squad, announced Monday evening.

Two Warrior players earned All-State recognition.

Senior point guard Connor McLaughlin, the 2013-14 Star Beacon Ashtabula County Player of the Year, earned the third-team recognition in this, his senior campaign.

He averaged nearly a triple-double for Edgewood this season.

McLaughlin is joined on the All-Ohio squad by teammate Eli Kalil.

The junior forward, who led Edgewood in scoring and hit the gamewinning 3-point play in a thrilling regular-season victory at Jefferson, was accorded honorable-mention honors.

McLaughlin and Kalil are joined on the Division II All-Ohio squad by Jefferson’s David Chase.

The 6-foot-7 senior post player led the Falcons in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots in helping Jefferson win 15 games – the most by any Falcon boys team since coach Rick Nemet’s Falcons posted a 16-5 mark and won a Class AA sectional championship at Warren Western Reserve High School in the 1978-79 season.

Earning the recognition on the hardwood means Chase, who has signed to attend and compete in track and field at Hillsdale College, has achieved state-level recognition in three different sports.

He has been part of a Jefferson cross country team that reached the state meet in the fall and qualified for the state track and field meet in the high jump the last two seasons.

The area was shut out in terms of recognition on the Division I squad.

The All-Ohio squads in Division III and Division IV will be announced by the Associated Press tonight.

Ohio’s Mr. Basketball winner for the 2013-14 season will be announced later this week.
