HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP —
Spire Institute becomes a hub of collegiate championship activity this weekend as the Harpersfield Township facility hosts both the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships and Atlantic 10 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships.
Additionally, Spire and the United States Olympic Committee will hold a joint press conference at 10:30 a.m. today. The press conference will feature Spire and USOC officials, Olympic track legend Michael Johnson and Greater Cleveland Sports Commission Vice President Jeff Pacini.
The Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships begin today at 10 a.m. and continue at 10 a.m. on Saturday. It will be the first time in Big Ten history that both men’s and women’s championships will be contested at the same time.
Indiana won its first men’s conference title since 1992 after totaling 104 points at last year’s championships to earn the win. Minnesota was second with 100 points, and Wisconsin was third with 99. Ohio State (94.33 points) and Wisconsin (75) rounded out the top five.
Nebraska took home the 2012 Women’s Big Ten Championship in its first year in the conference, compiling 114.5 points en route to first-place honors. Ohio State finished second with 106 points, while Penn State placed third with 99 points. Illinois came in fourth with 79 points, and Michigan State recorded 77.5 points to round out the top five.
The Big Ten meet will feature 49 athletes who garnered All-American status in 2012 (30 male, 19 female).
Also participating in the meet are several student-athletes with Northeast Ohio ties, including former Edgewood great Mallory Kreider of Ohio State and Buckeye All-American and Glenville High School product Marvel Brooks.

The Atlantic 10 Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship kicked off on Wednesday and continues through Saturday with morning prelim sessions at 10:30 a.m. and evening finals sessions at 6:30 p.m.
