Lake Catholic wins Jefferson district for the 12th time

JEFFERSON — Turns out, the 11 coaches of the teams involved in the 2013 Jefferson Division II sectional-district volleyball tournament got it right.

Five-time defending champion Lake Catholic was voted the tournament’s No. 1 seed and coach Rich Severino’s Cougars validated it by routing North Coast League rival and second-seeded Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in the championship match, 25-20, 25014 and 25-18, on Thursday night at Falcon Gym.

With the victory, the Cougars (20-5) move on to regional play at Stow. The loss for the Lions, who took on their archrivals in the championship for the fourth year in a row, ends their season at 17-8.

In the 25-year history of the tournament, run expertly by tournament manager Tim Mizer and his sidekick, Rod Holmes, Lake Catholic has won it 12 times and finished as runner-up three times.

Next in line is Jefferson with eight titles and four runner-up finishes, followed by Edgewood with three crowns and three second-place finishes.

The last non-Lake Catholic champion was Hubbard in 2007, which defeated Lake Catholic in the title match, which Jefferson did in 2006.

In the first 11years of the tournament, public schools won it nine times.

In the last 14 years, public schools have won it only twice — the aforementioned titles by Jefferson in 2006 and Hubbard in 2007.
