A fine start, but...

Geneva’s tandem of Lynham, Varckette fall in Columbus

The Geneva doubles team of Alyx Lynham and Amy Varckette got off to a good start at the Division II Ohio State Tennis Championships at Ohio State University on Friday.

The duo led 3-1 in the first set against Chesapeake’s Meili Martin and Minda Martin, but were unable to maintain that advantage, ultimately falling in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

“We were up 3-1, we were riding high,” Geneva coach Scott Torok said. “It’s one of those days where you kinda wish you got pasted, 6-0, 6-0 because it was right there for us. They put up a good fight, but it feels like one that got away. It’s gonna bother us for a while.”

Torok said he felt the Eagles team wasn’t able to exploit Chesapeake’s weaknesses as well as he would’ve liked.

“One of their girls was really good and one was a little weaker and we didn’t exploit that as much as we could have,” he said. “We got beat by one girl, it seemed, so that’s hard to accept.”

For Lynham, it was the end of a stellar career with the Eagles.

“(I) feel bad for Alyx that it’s the end of her career, but she had a tremendous career,” Torok said. “One of her goals was to get down here to Columbus. There’s been a lot of great players at Geneva and not many get that far. It’s a tribute to her work ethic and accomplishing her goals.”

For Varckette, Torok hopes this is just the first of more trips to Columbus for the freshmen.

“This is a nice start for Amy. Hopefully, this is something she’ll remember and make it a goal to get back,” he said. “I think this is tremendous. She made a name for herself in the state as just a freshman and people are going to have to watch out for her from here on out.”

  • Olivia In transition

Pymatuning Valley graduate Olivia Holt had a distinct reason she chose to play basketball for Mount Union.
“They do have tradition,” Holt, the daughter of Gus and Michelle Holt, said. “I’m from PV. We had a tradition of winning and working hard there. I wanted to go somewhere that tradition mattered. I knew I was going to get better by coming here.”

    Think spring?
If this, um, err, uh... spring... feels a bit unusual for high school baseball and softball teams in Northeast Ohio, it is, to a point.
