Walk like an Eagle:

GHS graduates to organize weekly walks to benefit Memorial Field

GENEVA — Walking the track at Memorial Field is a compromised dream for Lisa Pucci-Delgado.

On one hand, Delgado is home again — back to her field, the place of her youth. On the other hand, the hill behind the field is bare where the home grandstands once stood. The bleachers on the opposite side is also a missing landmark. The track is rutted and muddy.

There’s a lot of work to do at Memorial Field, and Delgado, who led the charge to keep the field open to the public after it was damaged by arson more than a year ago, says the community will rally to get the work done.

“We are overjoyed to be here today,” she said. “Walking this track is the most fantastic feeling.”

Now, Delgado said she is ready to begin fundraising for the field and is recruiting volunteers of all kinds to help in the effort.

“First, we are going to put together a walking group to meet here from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday and Sunday,” she said. “These community ‘Eagle Walks’ will be free and open to the public, but we will do some fundraising.”

Delgado said the first order of business is finding the donation of cinders for the walking track and she is hoping to find a volunteer to grade the track and remove the ruts and low points to keep mud puddles at bay.

“We are looking for anyone who can help,” she said. “The black cinder footing is terrible right now, but we know it will be great with some help and some effort. The track is our first priority.”

Another concern is the small bleachers on the property, which need new wooden planks, paint and possibly reinforcement.

“They are in pretty sad shape,” group member Sandy Menor said.

Donations of supplies and elbow grease are always appreciated, too, she said.

Although the Indians are still very much mathematically alive in the race for a postseason berth, they continue not to look like a playoff team. And when they have put a run together, they haven’t been able to maintain the habit of playing winning baseball.
