Jefferson wins first county youth duals

PV’s Gunner Ellis earns Most Valuable Wrestler recognition

Four county programs participated in the first Ashtabula County Youth Duals meet held at Pymatuning Valley, with the Jefferson Falcons walking away with the team championship.

The Falcons swept all three of their matches in impressive style, defeating the PV Lakers in the opening round, 61-34, following up with a 63-42 win over the Geneva Eagles and closing out with a 76-16 over the Conneaut Cougars.

In other action, Geneva defeated Conneaut, 84-34, PV slipped by Conneaut, 54-47, and Geneva edged PV, 56-48.

PV’s Gunner Ellis, wrestling at 70 pounds, was chosen the meet’s Most Valuable Wrestler.

They included fifth grader Josh Baitt at 67 pounds, sixth grader Bo Bubonic at 150 pounds, fifth grader Zach Bubonic at 73 pounds, sixth grader Bryce Cox at 76 pounds, fourth grader Michael Hamski at 60 pounds, fourth grader Jason Mayes at 56 pounds, fifth grader Hunter Ryan at 64 pounds, third grader Cole Smock at 52 pounds and second grader Evan Smock at 48 pounds.

  • Don A Don McCormack column: ‘Kids’ stuff’ spurs great responses

I’m often caught more than a bit off-guard by what stories, features or columns generate responses from you, Loyal Readers, much more so than those who do not.
For example, the column that appeared in this space a couple of days ago regarding things yours truly and my buddies did as kids prompted more than a few responses.
A sampling, many of which were posted on my Facebook page:

  • Olivia In transition

Pymatuning Valley graduate Olivia Holt had a distinct reason she chose to play basketball for Mount Union.
“They do have tradition,” Holt, the daughter of Gus and Michelle Holt, said. “I’m from PV. We had a tradition of winning and working hard there. I wanted to go somewhere that tradition mattered. I knew I was going to get better by coming here.”

Paying a Wednesday morning visit to the variety store...

    Think spring?
If this, um, err, uh... spring... feels a bit unusual for high school baseball and softball teams in Northeast Ohio, it is, to a point.
