Jefferson wins first county youth duals

PV’s Gunner Ellis earns Most Valuable Wrestler recognition

Four county programs participated in the first Ashtabula County Youth Duals meet held at Pymatuning Valley, with the Jefferson Falcons walking away with the team championship.

The Falcons swept all three of their matches in impressive style, defeating the PV Lakers in the opening round, 61-34, following up with a 63-42 win over the Geneva Eagles and closing out with a 76-16 over the Conneaut Cougars.

In other action, Geneva defeated Conneaut, 84-34, PV slipped by Conneaut, 54-47, and Geneva edged PV, 56-48.

PV’s Gunner Ellis, wrestling at 70 pounds, was chosen the meet’s Most Valuable Wrestler.

Jefferson was powered to its win by nine wrestlers who went undefeated for the day. They included fifth grader Josh Baitt at 67 pounds, sixth grader Bo Bubonic at 150 pounds, fifth grader Zach Bubonic at 73 pounds, sixth grader Bryce Cox at 76 pounds, fourth grader Michael Hamski at 60 pounds, fourth grader Jason Mayes at 56 pounds, fifth grader Hunter Ryan at 64 pounds, third grader Cole Smock at 52 pounds and second grader Evan Smock at 48 pounds.

Jefferson wrestlers with 2-1 records included sixth grader Logan George at 79 pounds, third grader Jaret Hall at 130 pounds, fourth grader Dakota Ryan at 70 pounds, sixth grader Mitchell Skleres at 90 pounds, sixth grader Robbie Slowey at 110 pounds and sixth grader Mason Swiney at 120 pounds.

The county youth wrestlers are now preparing for sectional tournament action Sunday at Madison High School.
