Pirates fall just short vs. Kenston

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Hard luck befell the Perry offense in a 19-15 loss to Kenston on Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

The Pirates (4-3, 2-2 in Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division) took over at their own 8 following an interception late in the fourth quarter trailing by four. Fifteen plays later, they were on the brink of going in for the win, but fumbled away their chances.

Facing fourth and 15 from his own 27, Perry quarterback Ryan Kahoun hit Zak Hurd for a 22-yard completion to keep the drive alive. Later, on fourth and 1 from the Kenston 27, Kahoun scrambled down to the 3, was hit and lost his handle on the ball. Kenston (5-2, 3-1) recovered in the end zone and took over on its own 20 with just 37 seconds to play.

The Pirates missed an opportunity earlier in the contest when it fumbled into the end zone on its second possession. The Bombers recovered that one, as well.

Perry led, 15-13, at the half following a flurry in the final minute of the second quarter.

Kyle Kremiller booted a 24-yard field goal with eight seconds left. His squib kick hit a Kenston player and was recovered by the Pirates, who used a hook-and-lateral to Brock Hurd to score with no time on the clock.

Kremiller carried 25 times for 122 yards, Kahoun carried 21 times for 68 yards and Zak Hurd had 49 yards on 132 carries. Kahoun was also 10 of 19 passing for 126 yards.

  • Don A Don McCormack column: ‘Kids’ stuff’ spurs great responses

I’m often caught more than a bit off-guard by what stories, features or columns generate responses from you, Loyal Readers, much more so than those who do not.
For example, the column that appeared in this space a couple of days ago regarding things yours truly and my buddies did as kids prompted more than a few responses.
A sampling, many of which were posted on my Facebook page:

  • Olivia In transition

Pymatuning Valley graduate Olivia Holt had a distinct reason she chose to play basketball for Mount Union.
“They do have tradition,” Holt, the daughter of Gus and Michelle Holt, said. “I’m from PV. We had a tradition of winning and working hard there. I wanted to go somewhere that tradition mattered. I knew I was going to get better by coming here.”

  • Don A Don McCormack column: Spring has sprung one big leak

Paying a Wednesday morning visit to the variety store...

    Think spring?
If this, um, err, uh... spring... feels a bit unusual for high school baseball and softball teams in Northeast Ohio, it is, to a point.
