Mother Nature’s wrath

Fields hard hit by weather won’t be in use today

Mother Nature has unleashed her fury all winter and, unfortunately for high school spring sports squads in the area, she has not let up with her wrath.

Saturday’s abbreviated high school slate was wiped out, thanks to the rain (by day) and snow (by night) that struck the Northeast Ohio region.

And, according to coaches and athletic directors reached Sunday night, it doesn’t appear to be turning sunnyside up any time, soon.

Of the four baseball games scheduled for today, only one — the Perry at North clash — was not postponed Sunday.

The Hubbard at Edgewood, Ledgemont and Conneaut and Grand Valley at Fairport contests were all put on hiatus.

GV and Fairport have rescheduled today’s game for Tuesday, while Hubbard and Edgewood have set April 9 as their makeup date.

In terms of high school softball, three of the four games that were supposed to be on tap have were postponed Sunday, with only the game sending Conneaut to Grand Valley still up in the air.

The Hubbard at Edgewood, Madison at Fort LeBoeuf, Pa. and Lakeview at Jefferson contests were put on hold Sunday, with no makeup games being set.

If we thought we were hit hard in this area, Fort LeBoeuf coach Brian Kersch topped it.

“We got hammered,” he said. “We had at least 6 inches of snow fall on Saturday.”

Not forced to play on a combination of grass and dirt, high school tennis squads stand a much better chance at getting their contests in today.

Three such matches — Lakeside at Perry, Struthers at Edgewood and Jefferson at Harding — are on today’s area menu.

Considering the conditions of ballfields in these parts, tennis — along with track and field — might be the only things we have to feast on for most of this week.

Stay tuned.
