Tournament trail

Geneva seeded second in softball at Jeff

It’s already been a good week for the Geneva Eagles and it could be getting even better in a few days.

Coach Eleshia Pitcher’s Eagles earned the second seed at the Jefferson Division II sectional-district tournament Sunday.

On top of that, over the course of the next three days, Pitcher & Co. will be gunning for a second straight Premier Athletic Conference championship.

Sunday, though, the PAC-leading Eagles (11-2) received the second seed at the 12-team Jefferson sectional-district.

Fellow area squads Jefferson (15-4), Conneaut (12-4), Perry (12-6) and Edgewood (10-12) were seeded third, fifth, eighth and ninth, respectively.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (19-4) is the top seed, while Lake Catholic (12-5) is seeded fourth.

The rest of the field includes sixth-seeded Beaumont (12-6), seventh-seeded Hathaway Brown (14-6), 10th-seeded West Geauga (4-6), 11th-seeded Collinwood (1-5) and 12th-seeded Harvey. The Red Raiders did not have a representative show up for the tournament draw, so they were stuck with the last seeded in the tournament.

The sectional games will be played May 15 and May 16 at home sites.

The tournament moves to the JAGS Complex in Jefferson for the district games, which will be stages May 22 and May 23.

Geneva will take on the winner of a first-round game between Conneaut and Harvey in a sectional championship game.

Jefferson will play the survivor of a first-round tile between Edgewood and Lake Catholic in a sectional title contest.

Perry will play Hathaway Brown in a sectional semifinal, with the winner moving on to tackle Beaumont in a sectional championship matchup.

The district champion moves on to play in the regional at Firestone Stadium in Akron, which is also the site of the state tournament.

Geneva holds a one-game lead in the PAC standings, with Riverside and South tied, one game back.

The Eagles play at South today, then host Riverside on Tuesday and journey to Lakeside on Wednesday.

Three wins will mean Geneva is the PAC champion again.

Jefferson, on the other hand, finds itself tied with LaBrae in the lower tier of the All-American Conference.

If the Falcons can win at Newton Falls on Tuesday, beat visiting LaBrae in a showdown Wednesday and best invading Liberty on Friday, they will be AAC champions.

Division III

This Jefferson sectional-district has been divided into an East sectional and a West sectional.

Pymatuning Valley (10-6) is the fourth seed in the East sectional, while Grand Valley (5-13) is the sixth seed.

Sectional games will be played May 16 an May 17 at home sites, with the district games heading to JAGS on May 23 and May 24.
