For the Star Beacon
The wrestlers of Ashtabula County made their mark during the 2012-13 season.
More than 30 county competitors advanced to their respective district tournaments and five qualified for the Ohio State Wrestling Championships in Columbus.
Headlining that stellar effort was Star Beacon Ashtabula County Wrestler of Year Kyle Conel of Lakeside.
Conel won 46 straight matches before losing in the Division I state championship match at 195 pounds.
Conel was joined at Value City Arena by teammate Chuck Morgan, who was seventh in the heavyweight division.
Those performances helped Lakeside coach Jerry Brady earn Coach of the Year honors.
Also making their way to Columbus were first-team members Sean Szitas (152 pounds) and Glenn Zaller (182) of Grand Valley and Billy Post (220) of Conneaut.
The remainder of the first team all wrestled at their district tournaments and include Joey Baitt (126), Ricker Maple (138), Blake Perry (182) and Rocky Tripodi (170) of Jefferson; Dakota Brininger (132) and Will Distler (106) of Geneva; Zach Campbell (132) and Cody Ellis (182) of Pymatuning Valley; Tanner Perry (106) of Edgewood and Alesha Zappitella (106) of Conneaut.
