The time is almost at hand for at least a portion of the ongoing saga that is high schools across not only the area, but all of Northeast Ohio, to figure out where they fit in terms of conference affiliation.
And the deadline is upon us for Ashtabula County high schools Edgewood and Pymatuning Valley to decide to accept or decline standing invitations from the All-American Conference. School officials are to inform the league of their intentions by Monday.
Edgewood has been competing as an independent since the demise of the Northeastern Conference after the 2008-09 school year.
Word is, the school is but certain to accept the invitation and throw its hat into the ring and join the AAC.
On the other side of the coin, we hear Pymatuning Valley is much less inclined to say yes to the AAC and will, in fact, say no to the league.
None of that is for certain, however, and we’ve heard nothing concrete and all of the above is simply one guy’s opinion.
Along those lines, where does that leave Ashtabula County’s other non-conference aligned high school, Conneaut?
Having been left out when the AAC extended invitations to Edgewood and Pymatuning Valley, we understand Conneaut school officials have continued to work diligently toward finding a place to call home, including approaching the AAC again and asking to reconsider them.
If PV does indeed decline its invite, the AAC has plenty of options, including Conneaut, as 10 schools have informed the Chagrin Valley Conference that they intend to withdraw from the league after the 2014-15 school year.
Leaving the CVC will be Aurora, Kenston, Cuyahoga Heights, Richmond Heights, Berkshire, Cardinal, Fairport and Newbury.
What does all of this mean, exactly? At this point, a whole lot of nothing as the conference picture remains as murky as a scene from Stephen King’s best-ever work, “The Mist.”
However, we should know at least a bit more, come Monday.
At least that’s the plan, anyway.
