— Believe it or not, sports fans, the 2013-14 school year is exactly one week away.

At least in terms of high school sports, that is.

The season will tip off with the 12th annual Karl Pearson Invitational, will be contested one week from today at Maple Ridge Golf Course.

The event was originally dubbed the Star Beacon Invitational. However, it was renamed the Karl Pearson Invitational in honor of the late, beloved Star Beacon sports writer who passed away Aug. 21, 2011.

The boys and girls golf squads in the Star Beacon coverage area will take part in the annual event, which was the brainstorm of former Star Beacon publisher Ed Looman.

All the boys and girls teams will play 18 holes at the beautiful course in Saybrook Township.

All of the players will be treated to a hot dog and a soft drink at the turn during their rounds and pizza from Domino’s will be served after the conclusion of their rounds.

Awards will be presented to the boys and girls medalists, plus a team trophy and individual plaques for members of the respective championship squads.

Also, a closest-to-the-pin trophy for one boy and one girl will be presented.

The defending team champions are the Geneva girls and the Riverside boys.

A year ago, the Eagles shot 324 steamroll the field, finishing a staggering 97 shots ahead of second-place Madison (421).

Riverside prevailed on the boys side in 2012 with a score of 312, which was five shots better than runner-up Lakeside (217).

Danielle Nicholson of Geneva will go for a third straight medalist honor after shooting a 69 last year. On the boys’ side, there will be a new medalist this year as the 2012 medalist, Nick Pae of Geneva, graduated last spring. Pae shot 73 a year ago.

Closest-to-the-pin winners from 2012 were Madison senior Taylor Pitts and Geneva sophomore Jacob Huang.

All expenses for the event will be covered by the Star Beacon.
